New to search engine optimisation? There are several common mistakes made by SEO newbies – avoiding these will help your SEO strategy get off on the right foot.
Online marketing company Ignite Visibility’s Founder and President John Lincoln shared his tips on how to learn from the errors of others in an article for SEO news website Search Engine Land.
According to Lincoln, if you are an SEO newbie, one of the main things to be aware of is algorithm changes, which means a strategy that achieved search engine results page (SERP) rankings on Google a couple of years ago may not be as effective now. You may find that your existing pages are performing the dreaded ‘Google dance’ – shifting rankings as a result of algorithm changes.
Lincoln wrote that you should ask yourself what you know about the latest algorithm change, and then find out everything you do not know by keeping abreast of the changes, which are documented by sites such as Search Engine Land.
Lincoln urged newcomers to SEO to find out as much as possible about successfully ranking web pages from authorities like Search Engine Land and Moz, and added that it is important to keep in mind that you do not know it all and to ask experts questions, as well as manage expectations.
It is also important to be aware of poor performance. If you do not have the right SEO strategy, Lincoln advises you to reach out to those in the know and address problems head-on, as dancing around the reasons for poor performance does not do any good in SEO.
Newbies should also avoid the temptation of focusing on ranking pages with ‘easy’ keywords in order to make SEO less tedious. Instead, ensure you focus on keywords that will yield a large enough return to contribute to top-line growth, along with good content and good links.
According to Lincoln, monitoring page rankings on a weekly basis to determine whether your strategy is working is imperative. If the trend is satisfactory, your efforts are paying off. If it is not, it could be time to seek advice from an experienced SEO professional.
Lincoln concludes that, as an SEO newbie, you will more than likely make mistakes, but by learning from the errors of others, you can give your strategy an early boost.
